The Rugby Football League (RFL) has confirmed that an independent investigation will examine the conduct of both Leigh Leopards and Wigan Warriors regarding events spanning the last year. The governing body stated that the RFL and RL Commercial Boards have formally notified both clubs that the probe is underway.
The inquiry stems from a prolonged dispute between the two Super League sides that originated nearly a year ago during a high-profile ticketing disagreement. At the time, Leigh owner Derek Beaumont threatened to boycott a fixture due to a conflict over ticket allocations, which were set at 4,800 for the Leopards. Although the match eventually proceeded with Wigan winning 18-6 and eliminating Leigh from the play-offs, tensions resurfaced over the weekend.
Friction re-emerged as Wigan prepared to host Wakefield Trinity in their play-off semi-final. An original post by Wigan detailed ticketing arrangements, stating that the visiting team would receive an allocation of 5,000 tickets for safety reasons. This followed Leigh’s defeat by Wakefield Trinity in the eliminator round, a loss that prevented them from facing Wigan in the next stage.
Beaumont drew further attention by posting a critique on social media platform X in response to Wigan’s statement. The RFL noted that his activity may also constitute a breach of the league’s social media code of conduct.
In a concise statement, the RFL confirmed: “The independent Rugby Football League and RL Commercial Boards have issued a letter to both Leigh Leopards RLFC and Wigan Warriors RLFC advising them there will be an independent investigation into the conduct and actions of both clubs and the governing body in relation to matters extending over the last 12 months.” The organization added that no further commentary would be provided until the investigation concludes.
Wigan currently sits atop the Super League regular season table, having secured the League Leaders’ Shield with a dominant 50-12 victory over Catalans Dragons. Leigh finished fifth in the standings.
The Super League play-offs are currently in progress, with semi-finals scheduled for September 25 and 26. The season will culminate in the Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 3, all broadcast live on Sky Sports.
