Germany Reaffirms Stance on Russia Sanctions Following US Diesel Deal

German officials declared on Saturday that the country remains fully committed to maintaining sanctions against Russia, positioning itself firmly alongside its European partners despite recent policy shifts from the United States. The statement came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced a temporary suspension of American sanctions, a move designed to allow Russia to supply over 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to global markets.

Government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius confirmed that Berlin had taken note of Washington’s decision regarding Russian diesel deliveries. However, he emphasized that the federal government’s dedication to existing sanctions packages has not wavered. “The federal government remains committed to the decisions on sanctions against Russia and is working with its European partners on further sanctions,” Kornelius stated.

The German stance underscores the nation’s status as Ukraine’s largest financial backer in Europe. During a recent visit to Kyiv, Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s self-defense efforts. A spokesperson for Economic Affairs Minister Katherina Reiche added that Germany stands fully behind the sanctions regime, noting that the country has successfully diversified its energy supply and ceased importing Russian oil since 2023.

Trump’s decision to lift sanctions represents a significant reversal in US policy. The move was motivated by record-high diesel prices globally, which have surged following the outbreak of war in Iran—a conflict involving the US and Israel. Domestically, these elevated fuel costs are creating political pressure on Trump’s Republican party ahead of the midterm elections in November. While Trump claimed on social media that the deal would immediately open markets, it remains uncertain how much Russian fuel will actually reach global supply lines, particularly as Ukraine continues to strike Russian refineries and domestic shortages persist.

The diplomatic tensions were further highlighted by the controversy surrounding former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. Schröder, known for his close ties to Moscow, attended Vladimir Putin’s 74th birthday celebration in Moscow earlier in the week. His presence drew sharp criticism from within Germany, including from Green Party co-leader Franziska Brantner, who suggested that Schröder’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) should reconsider his membership. SPD former labor minister Hubertus Heil also condemned the event, describing the embrace with a leader he characterized as a dictator as deeply outrageous and unjustifiable given the ongoing suffering caused by Russian military actions in Ukraine.

  1. Schroder partying at Putin’s birthday while we fund Ukraine’s defense? Absolutely disgraceful behavior from the SPD.

  2. Temporary US reprieve? Sounds like a loophole designed to keep sanctions weak anyway. Will this actually change anything?

  3. Merz is holding the line while Trump plays politics with fuel prices. Germany finally looks united on this.
