Gary Oldman, who portrayed Sirius Black in the Warner Bros. film franchise, stated that he expects HBO’s upcoming television adaptation to be more enjoyable for viewers than the movies. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the British actor attributed this potential success to the series’ commitment to the original novels, whereas the films were heavily condensed.
Oldman noted that the movie run necessitated significant cuts, ultimately stretching the narrative across approximately three hours while sacrificing crucial character development. He suggested that HBO plans to adapt the story nearly verbatim from the books, a approach he believes will resonate better with the audience.
The actor has previously expressed frustration regarding the limited screen time his character received in the cinematic universe. Sirius Black made his debut in 2004’s “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” with only brief appearances in “Goblet of Fire” and “Order of the Phoenix” before his death in “Deathly Hallows Part 2.” In 2024, Oldman told IndieWire that the character “wasn’t in it enough,” noting the abrupt nature of the character’s exit.
Despite these critiques, Oldman expressed gratitude for his involvement in the film series, calling it a unique cultural phenomenon. He specifically highlighted the contributions of director Chris Columbus, praising him for establishing the world and assembling the cast, as well as the original production team for returning for subsequent installments to allow the actors to mature into their roles.
Season one of the HBO series has completed filming and is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on December 25. Production on the second season, based on the second book in Rowling’s series, is currently underway at Leavesden Studios outside London. As of now, HBO has not revealed who will portray Sirius Black in the new series.
The established cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Veteran actors John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Rory Wilmot, and Lox Pratt have also been cast as Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, Rubeus Hagrid, Neville Longbottom, and Draco Malfoy, respectively.
Oldman is set to return for the sixth season of Apple TV’s “Slow Horses,” which premieres on September 16. When reflecting on his own performance in the films, Oldman has been self-critical, once describing his work as “mediocre” before clarifying that such scrutiny is a natural part of an artist’s process rather than an attempt to disparage fans or the character.

I loved the movies, but Oldman has a point. Three hours for eight books was never going to work.
