Celine Dion Returns to Stage in Paris After Six-Year Hiatus

Celine Dion is set to reclaim the stage on Saturday evening for her first full concert in six years, marking a significant milestone in her recovery from Stiff Person Syndrome. The legendary Canadian singer, 58, will perform at the Plenitude Arena outside Paris, where approximately 30,000 fans are expected to attend the sold-out opening night of a 26-date residency.

The Quebec-born star revealed her diagnosis in December 2022, describing the rare autoimmune disorder as causing severe muscle stiffness and intense spasms so painful they have resulted in broken ribs. The condition previously forced her to cancel performances and left her struggling to sing, leading many to question if she would ever return to live shows.

However, Dion remained determined to perform again. She offered a preview of her resilience during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, making a surprise appearance on the Eiffel Tower to sing Edith Piaf’s “Hymn to Love.” Speaking to NBC two years ago, she expressed her confidence, stating, “I’m going to come onstage because I’m ready. And my vocal cords will not scare me… I’m going to hit those notes.”

Fans have anticipated this moment for years, with some traveling from as far as London. Chloe and Katy Rydquist paid roughly 1,500 pounds ($2000) for their tickets, with Chloe noting, “She’s a legend, she’s iconic… For her to have this comeback, we were like, we need to be there for the first night.”

Celebrations have extended beyond the arena, with Paris hosting costume contests, tribute cruises on the Seine, and large-scale karaoke events. In the city’s 19th district, hundreds gathered for a free singalong on Friday. Eva Ingelaere, 24, said, “I really wanted to go to her concert, but I didn’t get a ticket, so I thought I might as well have a massive karaoke session.”

Dion has also interacted directly with supporters near her residence at the Royal Monceau hotel in the 8th arrondissement, often joining fans for impromptu song and dance sessions into the early hours. The current residency begins with 16 sold-out shows in September and October, followed by an additional 10 performances next May. Over her four-decade career, Dion has sold approximately 260 million albums worldwide, with hits including “My Heart Will Go On,” “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” and “Because You Loved Me.”
