French PM Addresses Student Protests, Promises October Plan

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu delivered a televised address on Wednesday evening, stating that the French government cannot remain “indifferent” to the grievances raised by high school students participating in ongoing demonstrations. He acknowledged that the frustration expressed by young people is rooted in legitimate concerns, noting that their “anger of young people does not come from nowhere.”

Lecornu also sought to clarify the stance of law enforcement, denying reports that security forces have been issued “orders to confront” the demonstrators. Instead, he outlined that the administration is developing a comprehensive strategy to address the crisis, which is expected to be presented to the public at the end of October.

As the protests continue, questions remain regarding the specific measures the government may introduce and whether they will be sufficient to de-escalate the unrest. France 24’s Rochelle Ferguson Bouyahi examines the potential policy responses and the government’s approach to stabilizing the situation.

  1. Orders to confront? Really? Sounds like they are already escalating things behind the scenes while publicly denying it.

  2. Surprised they haven’t deployed more troops yet. Is the government waiting until the last minute to actually do something effective?

  3. Finally, someone admits the anger is legitimate. I hope the October plan is more than just empty promises and bureaucratic delays.
