Amazon Unveils New Line of Android-Based Alexa Tablets with Google Play Access

Amazon announced a new series of Alexa tablets on Thursday, marking a significant shift in its tablet strategy by incorporating Android and full access to the Google Play Store. The new lineup introduces three distinct models: the Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the Amazon Alexa Tablet 11, and the Amazon Alexa Tablet 8. Each device features an aluminum unibody construction and high-resolution displays, designed to run personalized intelligence through Amazon’s new Alexa+ AI assistant.

Until now, Amazon’s tablet offerings were limited to Fire OS devices with proprietary app stores. A company spokesperson clarified to TechCrunch that these new tablets represent an entirely new product line with fresh hardware and operating system, rather than a rebranding of existing Fire Tablets. This move aims to broaden Amazon’s appeal by allowing users to download millions of third-party applications, including popular services like YouTube, Netflix, and Gmail, right from launch.

The top-tier Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is engineered for productivity and media consumption, featuring a slim 6.5 mm profile and a 12-inch display with a 280 PPI resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Buyers can choose between a standard screen or a Nanomatte anti-glare option. Amazon claims this model offers nearly triple the processing power and nine times the graphics performance of its previous tablets, making it suitable for multitasking, gaming, and 4K streaming. It includes Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E, and 16 hours of battery life for video playback.

Accessories for the 12 Pro include a Pro Pen and a Pro Keyboard, positioning the device as a potential workstation replacement. Pricing begins at $499.99 for the standard model and $549.99 for the Nanomatte version, both available in Graphite. The tablet also introduces On-Screen Intelligence, enabling users to ask Alexa contextual questions about what is currently displayed on the screen.

For users seeking a mid-range option, the Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 features an 11-inch 2.5K display with 276 PPI and 90Hz smooth scrolling. Designed for streaming, gaming, and reading, it boasts dual Dolby Atmos speakers and 15 hours of video playback. This model starts at $329.99 and comes in Graphite, Amethyst, and Matcha.

The most portable option, the Amazon Alexa Tablet 8, has an 8.7-inch display and weighs just 329 grams, making it easy to hold with one hand. It also features an all-aluminum design and is priced at $229.99, available in Graphite, Rosette, and Teal.

All three devices will feature an optimized Kindle reading experience that silences notifications, reduces blue light, and extends battery life to up to 20 hours. Additionally, Amazon revealed new Amazon Kids tablets in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes, bundled with protective cases and a year of Amazon Kids+ for ad-free access to children’s content. Separate versions are available for children aged 3 and up, and those aged 6 and older.

The Amazon Alexa Tablets and Kids Tablets will be available for purchase starting October 14, 2026, in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. A broader launch across the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain is scheduled for October 19, with the Kids Tablets also becoming available in Japan on the initial release date.

  1. Three sizes is nice, but will these run Fortnite? That’s the real test for Android tablets these days.

  2. The 12 Pro specs look solid for the price, but I hope the battery life actually hits 16 hours in real use.
