Forrest claims Spanish Open and secures major championships

Scotland’s Grant Forrest secured a dramatic victory at the Spanish Open, a triumph that guarantees him places in both next year’s Open Championship and the Masters tournament. He held off a late charge from home favorite Eugenio Chacarra to claim his third DP World Tour title.

Entering the final round sharing the lead with England’s Joe Dean at 13 under par, Forrest saw his momentum stall early on the back nine. He dropped two shots through bogeys at the third, sixth, and eighth holes, allowing Chacarra to surge into the clubhouse at 13 under.

Forrest displayed significant resilience to stay in contention. He birdied the fourth hole but recovered with three birdies and a bogey across five holes on the back nine to return to the top of the leaderboard.

The winner was decided on the 72nd hole. Playing alongside France’s Victor Perez, both golfers needed a birdie to finish ahead of Chacarra. Their drives found the greenside rough on the par-four, and while Perez’s attempt drifted past the cup, Forrest successfully sank his putt to seal the victory.

Finishing at 14 under par with a closing one-under 70, Forrest took home the £480,000 first prize. He narrowly beat Chacarra, Victor Perez, and a group featuringJon Rahm and Jesper Svensson who finished at 13 under.

“I’m in pure shock just now,” Forrest said. “It’s been such a tough year. I’ve got good memories of this course and this tournament. To do it is unbelievable.”

Reflecting on the pressure of the final holes, he added: “I wasn’t too sure what other groups were doing. It was a matter of staying in it. I dug in so well.”

Forrest described the dual qualification for Augusta and St Andrews as “fairytale stuff,” noting that many professionals go their entire careers without the opportunity to compete at those events.
