A federal immigration agent shot and injured a man in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, marking another violent encounter between law enforcement and community members in a city that has seen increased federal immigration enforcement activity.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson announced that the victim is currently in serious but stable condition. Watson expressed both anger and frustration regarding the incident, stating he was “not surprised at all” by the shooting. He drew parallels to similar events in other cities where the Department of Homeland Security has conducted large-scale immigration operations, such as Chicago and Minneapolis.
Austin Councilmember Mike Siegel, who reported from the scene just blocks from his home, confirmed that the victim’s vehicle sustained at least two bullet holes on the passenger side. Video footage obtained by Siegel showed at least one uninjured individual in civilian clothing being handcuffed at the scene.
Dozens of community members gathered to protest the shooting. Siegel described the event as a “terrible incident” that the community had hoped to avoid. He called for a thorough investigation and urged that if an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer committed a crime, they should face full prosecution to help restore the rule of law.
The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the specific circumstances that led to the discharge of weapons.
Austin Congressman Greg Casar, a Democrat, issued a statement demanding an independent investigation into the shooting. Casar referenced the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis earlier this year, noting that video evidence had disproven DHS claims that Good attempted to run over agents with her vehicle. “We can see the lies with our own eyes. We will demand truth, transparency and accountability,” Casar said.
This incident is the second shooting involving federal immigration agents in Texas since the start of President Trump’s second term. On March 15, 2025, Ruben Ray Martinez was killed by immigration agents in South Padre Island. Later that year, in July, agents in Houston shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national and father of three, following a traffic stop. Agents were attempting to execute a warrant on a different target at the time of Salgado Araujo’s death.
Texas has maintained close cooperation with the federal government on immigration issues since President Trump took office last year, with the Texas Department of Public Safety working closely with ICE.
Serious but stable is a relief, but how many more incidents before federal agents are held responsible? The pattern in Texas is deeply alarming.
Austin’s leadership is right to be furious. This escalation needs an immediate independent investigation to ensure accountability.
