The family of Welles Crowther, widely recognized as “The Man in the Red Bandana,” accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
Crowther became an iconic figure following the September 11 attacks after he entered the burning South Tower of the World Trade Center to rescue trapped victims. Wearing his signature red bandana, he saved as many as 18 people before perishing in the collapse of the building.
The Medal of Freedom stands as the nation’s highest civilian honor, recognizing individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, or other significant public or private endeavors.
Eighteen lives saved by one young man. The story of the Red Bandana remains one of the most powerful acts of bravery in history.
I wasn’t aware of the recent presentation. It is so important that we continue honoring these brave souls decades later.
This news is incredibly moving. Crowther’s selflessness defined true courage on that terrible day. Rest in peace, hero.
