Iran announced early Wednesday that it fired ballistic missiles at a United States military base located in Jordan. The offensive was characterized as a direct retaliation for recent American strikes targeting Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and close to Kharg Island, which sits off the Iranian coast.
In response to the naval attacks, Washington reported the destruction of five Iranian tankers. The escalation marks a significant intensification of tensions in the region, linking the maritime confrontation directly to land-based military actions against US forces.
