Expert Advice: Five Strategies for Parents Managing Kids’ Screen Time and Online Safety

Parental oversight plays a significant role in mitigating the risks associated with excessive screen use and social media exposure, according to recent medical research. Dr. Jason Nagata, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, emphasizes that parents serve as a crucial influence on their children’s digital behaviors.

Nagata and his colleagues recently analyzed global studies on social media policies and published their findings in JAMA Network Open. The report concluded that parental monitoring is largely effective in minimizing the potential harms of screen time.

In an article published by NPR on September 28, 2026, experts outlined five actionable tips for parents concerned about their children’s online safety.

1. Establish Clear Device Boundaries

Elizabeth Hoover, a former chief technology officer for Alexandria City Public Schools in Virginia, implemented strict rules before her daughters received personal smartphones. While the teens initially shared a family iPad, Hoover required permission for any app downloads and enforced specific time limits. Notably, her daughters were not permitted to use Instagram or Snapchat during their early middle school years.

2. Keep Devices Away During Meals and Bedtime

Both the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and researchers recommend prohibiting devices at the dinner table and in bedrooms at night. Nagata notes that these household rules correlate with lower scores for social media addiction and reduced overall usage time.

Furthermore, keeping phones out of the bedroom supports critical sleep hygiene and brain development. Nagata also warns that screen time during meals increases the risk of eating disorders. Exposure to extreme diet and fitness content, combined with distracted eating, can lead to both overeating and restrictive eating behaviors.

  1. The Instagram ban until middle school seems harsh, but I get why it helps early development. Good practical advice here.

  2. My kids say monitoring breeds resentment, not safety. Has anyone found a middle ground where trust isn’t sacrificed entirely?

  3. I wish more parents understood that screen time during meals isn’t just rude—it can actually impact eating disorders. Important warning.

  4. Does this advice work for college students? The article feels focused on younger teens rather than independent adults.

  5. Finally, research backs what I already knew. Keeping devices out of bedrooms is a game changer for our family’s sleep.
