European Leagues Demand FIFA Reform Over Failed World Cup Equity Deal

Leading European football leagues, spearheaded by England’s Premier League alongside La Liga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga, have issued a joint demand for sweeping governance reforms at FIFA. The statement targets FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s recent attempts to sell equity stakes in the World Cup, labeling his approach as prioritizing ‘exploitative ideas’ over the sport’s best interests.

The coalition’s announcement intensifies pressure on Infantino, who is preparing to run for re-election despite losing backing from numerous national federations. The controversy stems from an abandoned proposal to offer 20% of FIFA’s commercial rights for the World Cup to private investors through a dedicated subsidiary. Reports suggest the transaction could have been valued at approximately $4.2 billion, drawing sharp condemnation from UEFA and CONCACAF.

In their joint declaration, the leagues argued that the foundational structures of football are under threat due to deep-seated governance failures. The move follows a request from the England Football Association for Infantino to disclose all documentation related to the privatization plan and the controversial decision to overturn Folarin Balogun’s red card during the summer tournament.

Currently attending the Arabian Gulf Cup in Saudi Arabia, Infantino responded to the mounting criticism by asserting his commitment to doing what is right for the game. He shared via social media that he had received ‘positive messages’ regarding a letter sent to the FIFA council, in which he proposed a dialogue on organizational reforms.

Infantino emphasized the necessity of open communication and mutual respect ahead of the upcoming FIFA Council meeting scheduled for next month. Addressing skeptics, he stated that his focus is not on generating favorable headlines but on fostering growth for football globally. ‘I have never been more determined and committed,’ he wrote, adding that he remains engaged and eager to listen to member nations on how to benefit the sport everywhere.
