The Formula 1 paddock in Baku is preparing for a pivotal Friday as the final practice session and qualifying round approach. The schedule shift, necessitated by Azerbaijan’s Remembrance Day falling on Sunday, has compressed the weekend, moving the main event to Saturday and concentrating today’s critical track time into two sessions.
Mercedes and George Russell established clear superiority during Thursday’s earlier practice meetings, leaving championship leader Kimi Antonelli to contend with reliability issues. Teams such as Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren are now under pressure to narrow the performance deficit before the grid is set.
Attention also turned to Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton following a reprimand issued by the stewards after the second practice session. Hamilton was penalized for impeding McLaren’s Liam Lawson. Race Control noted that Hamilton, driving on an out lap, failed to adhere to instructions to stay on the extreme left between Turns 16 and 18, forcing Lawson to lift and brake slightly while attempting a flying lap.
Although impeding during practice typically results in a warning, stewards deemed Hamilton’s infringement severe due to the high-speed nature of the Baku circuit and the specific traffic management directives issued by the Race Director. Drivers are permitted four reprimands per season before a grid penalty is triggered; this marks Hamilton’s second of the campaign.
Final practice is scheduled for 9:30 am local time, followed by qualifying at 1:00 pm. Broadcast coverage is available live on Sky Sports F1 and Sky Sports Main Event, with streaming options accessible via the Sky Sports app and NOW Sports memberships.
