A leading European industry trade body has issued a stark warning that manufacturing job losses across the bloc will accelerate rapidly unless the European Commission intervenes to halt what it describes as the “colonisation” of key industries by Chinese component manufacturers.
Eurometal, which represents the metalworking and engineering sectors, predicts that approximately 300,000 factory positions will be lost in the remainder of 2026. The projection is driven by intensifying competition from China, which is currently reporting a record daily trade surplus of €1 billion with the European Union.
In response to the looming crisis, industry advocates have organised a protest in Brussels featuring ten coffins, a symbolic demonstration designed to highlight the dire struggles facing the continental manufacturing sector. Critics argue that the unchecked influx of Chinese goods threatens to undermine the viability of EU-based production facilities.
