Ethiopia’s Ministry of Education has announced that approximately 20,000 university students in the Tigray region will be temporarily moved to other public campuses. The directive follows accusations that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has been utilizing educational institutions as military bases.
The decision comes at a time when fighting and drone strikes persist in the northern region, raising significant concerns for the student population. Many individuals report that the psychological impact of the 2020-2022 Tigray war remains acute, with the trauma of that conflict still deeply felt by those affected.
Why now though? If there are drone strikes, should they even be going to class at all?
The psychological toll of constant displacement on these students is unimaginable. They just want to learn.
Are campus militarization claims verified? Feels like another excuse to tighten central control over Tigray’s youth.
Twenty thousand students uprooted again? After the last war, isn’t this just more instability?
This seems like a humanitarian gesture wrapped in political justification. Hope the students are safe.
