Human remains discovered in woodland in south-west London following a wildfire have been positively identified as Joanne Sheen, a 44-year-old mother who has been missing since December 2019.
Sheen was last seen on 5 December 2019 after travelling from Fareham to Southampton with a companion. Her disappearance triggered a extensive police inquiry that investigators described as both long and complex.
Metropolitan Police were alerted on 12 August after skeletal remains were located near Padstow Walk in Feltham in the aftermath of the fire. Following the identification, London detectives have transferred the investigation to Hampshire Police.
A 56-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and remains in custody. He is the only person detained in connection with the case.
Detective Chief Inspector Toby Elcock, leading the Major Crime Team investigation, addressed the findings. He acknowledged that while the identification would not bring the outcome the family desired, it offers answers after years of uncertainty. He praised the dignity shown by Sheen’s relatives throughout the ordeal.
“Our thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time,” Elcock said. “As our investigation progresses, we remain committed to establishing exactly what happened to Joanne and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.”
I can’t believe the fire led to the discovery. It’s terrifying to think how close we were to never knowing what happened to her.
A suspect already arrested? That’s surprisingly swift for such a cold case. I’m cautiously optimistic about justice this time.
It’s been seven years of agony for her family. I hope this identification brings them some semblance of closure finally.
