Epic Games Adopts ‘AI First’ Strategy for Disney Shooter Collaboration

Epic Games is undergoing a significant shift in its internal development methodology for its partnership with the Walt Disney Company, moving to an “AI first” approach. According to a Bloomberg report citing unnamed sources familiar with the project, artificial intelligence models will now be responsible for writing all code and guiding all artwork for an upcoming shooter title.

Internal employee messages reviewed by Bloomberg indicate that human developers will primarily manage and direct assets generated by large language models such as Anthropic’s Claude. The report describes this as a complete departure from traditional methods, stating there will be “no more hand-written code” and that art assets will be produced through “full AI workflows.”

The collaboration, valued at $1.5 billion and announced in early 2024, was initially scheduled to release a Marvel- and Star Wars-themed shooter in March 2027. However, the project has faced delays indefinitely due to the ongoing AI-related restructuring and development that has been slower than anticipated and understaffed.

  1. This is the future of game dev! Humans directing AI is way more efficient than writing every line manually. Can’t wait to see the results.

  2. Delaying to infinity because the AI restructuring is slower than expected. Seems like a classic case of overpromising and underdelivering.

  3. A $1.5 billion Disney shooter? Please tell me they keep the soul and magic that makes Disney games special. AI feels cold.

  4. As a developer, this terrifies me. If AI writes all the code, what happens to our jobs when this ‘efficiency’ scales?

  5. No hand-written code? I hope the bugs are just as autonomous as the features. Good luck with the QA testing.
