Delhi police have launched an investigation into the alleged gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl in an upscale neighborhood of the Indian capital on Monday evening. Authorities stated that three suspects, who impersonated police officers, assaulted the teenager and her male friend at a park in southeast Delhi.
According to reports from the Hindustan Times, the victims had been visiting a local temple before seeking refuge in a nearby park around 7:30 p.m. local time. There, they were intercepted by the three men, who claimed to be law enforcement officials. One suspect allegedly restrained the male companion while the others raped the girl. The attackers reportedly threatened to arrest the pair if they reported the crime.
Police received a call shortly after the incident and transported the victim for a medical examination. Investigations are currently underway under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant sections of Indian criminal law as authorities work to identify and locate the accused.
