Daughter Questions Mother’s $100,000 Gift to Brother After Years of Caretaking

A reader writing to MarketWatch’s advice columnist Quentin Fottrell has raised concerns about a significant financial disparity within her family. The writer, 54, revealed that while she has devoted considerable time and money to caring for her 79-year-old mother, her mother recently provided a $100,000 gift to her 50-year-old brother to help him purchase a house.

The mother, who is widowed, maintains a comfortable financial position. Her assets include approximately $900,000 in savings and investments, along with a paid-off home valued at roughly $600,000. She also receives Social Security benefits and a small pension. According to the daughter, her mother’s lifestyle is modest despite her wealth, and she has never faced financial insecurity.

The three siblings are all financially independent, though the daughter noted that her brother has consistently earned less than both her and their 57-year-old older sister. Three years prior to the current dispute, the brother and his wife sought to buy a home but lacked sufficient funds for a down payment in their desired area. The mother stepped in and gave him $100,000 to bridge the gap.

The daughter expressed the emotional complexity of the situation, stating, “I know my brother isn’t a villain. I know my mother isn’t a villain. That’s what makes this so hard.” The dilemma centers on whether she should pull back from her caretaking responsibilities given the perceived inequity in how parental assets were distributed versus her own non-financial contributions.
