The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s office released an autopsy report on Wednesday stating that the cause and manner of death for 18-year-old Nolan Wells are “undetermined.” The findings align with a preliminary private autopsy commissioned by Wells’ family, which also ruled the cause and manner of death as undetermined pending further investigation.
Wells, a college football player from Mississippi, disappeared on July 4, 2026, after taking a boat trip with friends to Horn Island. Authorities reported that he appeared to remain on the island after his companions departed. His body was recovered two days later on July 6.
While Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter noted there was no initial evidence of a crime, he emphasized that investigators are diligently working to establish exactly what transpired. The sheriff’s office has indicated it welcomes the independent investigation conducted by the Wells family.
In July, Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, expressed the family’s anguish while speaking to reporters. “Losing a child, it truly breaks your heart … especially someone like Nolan, who brought so much joy and light and life to everyone,” Wonsley said. “The only question we have is, what happened to our son?”
The private autopsy, performed independently of the state examiners, acknowledged multiple limitations but preliminarily concluded the cause and manner of death could not be determined at that time. As both official and independent reports leave the circumstances unresolved, the investigation into the teen’s death remains ongoing.
No signs of a crime initially, yet everything remains unresolved. Something about this timeline feels off to me.
