Cuba experienced its seventh significant electricity outage of the year on Friday, leaving millions of residents without power. The island nation, home to more than nine million people, continues to suffer from frequent blackouts stemming from the deteriorating condition of its old thermoelectric plants.
The crisis has intensified dramatically since January, when Washington implemented what is effectively an energy blockade against the Caribbean island. These restrictive measures have compounded the existing challenges faced by Cuba’s struggling energy sector.
While power failures have been a recurring issue for the nation, the combination of outdated infrastructure and external economic pressures has created a severe energy shortfall affecting daily life across the island.
