CDC Report Links Higher Income to Increased Fresh Produce Consumption in US

A recent data brief from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that US adults are more likely to consume fresh fruits and vegetables as their income levels rise. The findings underscore longstanding disparities between low- and middle-income households regarding access to healthy foods.

The report emerges during a period of significant shifts in US nutrition policy and assistance programs. Republican-led reductions to food aid initiatives, commonly referred to as food stamps, have resulted in a sharp decline in enrollment.

Additionally, changes to the US dietary guidelines, spearheaded by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, have altered government recommendations. A revised nutritional framework introduced in January prioritized animal proteins alongside fresh produce. However, studies indicate that adhering to this new diet involves higher costs compared to previous guidelines.

  1. Honestly, I’ve always bought my own groceries and don’t see a huge price difference between fruits and processed stuff.
