Critics Divided as Nigella Lawson Makes Bake Off Debut

Nigella Lawson has been praised by many television critics as the “icing on the cake” following her debut on The Great British Bake Off, which returned to Channel 4 on Tuesday. Lawson replaces Dame Prue Leith, who announced her departure earlier this year after nearly a decade in the show’s iconic tent. She joins long-standing judge Paul Hollywood and presenters Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding for the new series.

The Telegraph hailed the move as giving the programme “a new lease of life,” while Digital Spy called Lawson a “brilliant addition” to the panel. However, The Independent took a more critical stance, arguing that the launch episode “wastes Nigella’s prodigious charms” and fails to utilize her arrival for a genuine revamp of the format.

Giuseppe Dell’Anno, a former winner of the competition, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that Lawson represented a significant shift for the show. He described her as a “nice fit with the ethos of the programme,” noting that her intuitive approach to baking was well-balanced by Hollywood’s technical scrutiny. Dell’Anno predicted she would improve over time, suggesting she was still adjusting to new territory.

Lucy Mangan of the Guardian awarded the series five stars, describing Lawson as dispensing wisdom, generous praise, and gentle criticism. She noted that while Lawson is as confident as Leith, her quieter, more soothing presence complements Hammond’s energy and Hollywood’s instructional style. The Telegraph’s Anita Singh also gave five stars, calling the pairing “a match made in heaven” and highlighting Lawson’s glamour, intelligence, and characteristic innuendo, even as she offered supportive and helpful feedback to the bakers.

Conversely, Nick Hilton of the Independent awarded two stars, arguing that the show’s format feels “tired” and stale. While he acknowledged that securing Lawson would likely boost viewership, he felt her charm was applied too thinly to mask the lack of innovation, writing that instead of adapting the format for her, “the new judge bends to the will of the programme.”

Several reviewers observed that Lawson exercised restraint regarding her trademark playful suggestiveness during the first episode. Jane Rackham of the Radio Times noted that while viewers might expect the sauciness to be dialed up to 11, Lawson instead focused on informed and helpful comments. Janet A Leigh of Digital Spy agreed, observing that Lawson gently rebuffed opportunities for flirtatious engagement, choosing instead to celebrate food in a way that expanded the audience’s understanding of flavours without pretension.

Jan Moir of the Daily Mail described the performance as tremendous, highlighting a side of Lawson that was quirky, commanding, and humane. Ben Dowell of the Times acknowledged that while co-presenter Noel Fielding still appeared somewhat out of place, Lawson ensured the show was in safe hands, declaring that “Bake Off has found a new star.”
