Argonon, the independent production group known for formats such as “The Masked Singer U.K.,” has announced its most significant executive changes since its inception in 2011. Amanda Goddard, who previously served as the company’s chief commercial and legal officer, has been elevated to the roles of president and global CEO. In this capacity, she will hold worldwide strategic responsibility across the Argonon group and its seven constituent production companies.
Goddard succeeds founder James Burstall, who has led the organization as CEO for 15 years. Burstall will transition to the position of executive chairman across the group. Additionally, Matt Widmayer, formerly the CFO for Argonon USA, has been appointed global CFO, a role that splits his duties between the United Kingdom and the United States. Hasham Khan from ABP Advisory has also joined as a board consultant.
Burstall emphasized the need for adaptability in the current media landscape. “Our sector is changing at breakneck pace; a restless state of constant evolution is the single most important mindset in a creative business,” Burstall said. He noted that as platform-agnostic storytellers reaching millions globally, the company must remain “fearless, experimental, risk-taking and open to radical change” to stay at the forefront of the industry. He described the new leadership team as laying the foundation for an exciting future.
Alongside the leadership overhaul, Argonon is pursuing several strategic initiatives. The group is increasing investment in digital and self-publishing content to develop new intellectual property and engage wider audiences. Other focus areas include exploring international partnerships, expanding its New York operations, building advanced post-production facilities for its London labels, and accelerating AI capabilities. The company is also developing innovative funding models to support content creation and investment.
Goddard’s promotion follows a track record of driving the group’s diversification strategy. Leveraging Argonon’s library of more than 5,800 hours of content, she has worked to expand commercial revenue through brand partnerships, sponsorship, FAST, digital platforms, and podcasts. Her tenure has also seen the introduction of new content co-funding strategies, advocacy for a supportive U.K. tax environment for producers, and the development of the company’s AI policies.
“After 15 years leading Argonon’s operations across the UK and US, I am excited to hand over the CEO reins to Amanda,” said Burstall. He praised Goddard’s “astute commercial acumen, strong leadership and emotional intelligence” since she joined the company in 2019. “Her reputation, industry knowledge and strategic vision make her the natural choice to lead Argonon into its next chapter,” he added, confirming he will continue to work closely with her in his new chairman role.
Goddard expressed pride in stepping into the new position, highlighting the collaborative nature of the global business. She reaffirmed the company’s founding mission to provide an independent platform for agile and brave talent. “Our world class production companies produce diverse, platform-agnostic content that reaches audiences across the UK and in more than 160 countries, creating employment, economic value and social impact,” she said.
AI capabilities in content creation? Bold move. I wonder if they are using it for scripts or just marketing. Either way, risky.
Is anyone else surprised the founder isn’t fully retiring? Seems like a careful power transition to keep investors calm.
Great to see a woman leading such a major production house. Amanda Goddard clearly earned this promotion with her track record.
