Major American news organizations CNN, MS Now, and Politico have initiated legal proceedings against the Trump administration following the revocation of their White House press credentials. In a joint statement released on Monday, the outlets confirmed they notified the government of their intent to sue, framing the move as a necessary defense of First Amendment protections and the principle that the state cannot dictate journalistic output.
The legal action follows President Trump’s assertion that his administration is not targeting the free press at large, but rather engaging in an “assault on FAKE NEWS,” which he likened to a cancerous growth. This escalation continues a long-standing adversarial relationship dating back to his first term in 2017, when he frequently characterized the media as “the enemy of the American people.”
The outlets argued that the White House stripped their reporters’ entry badges “without notice or process,” driven solely by administrative objections to their reporting. They contended in court filings that the Constitution prohibits any president or official from depriving the press of their rights, liberty, or property interests based purely on content displeasure.
“Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference,” the statement read.
The ban has triggered immediate operational disruptions. CNN, a member of the White House television pool alongside ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC, was scheduled to cover President Trump’s arrival in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. However, its exclusion meant no pool feed could be provided.
In response, Bryan Boughton, who oversees the Fox News Washington bureau and currently serves as the TV pool chair, announced via email that the major networks had suspended their pool coverage effective Monday. He emphasized that no replacement pool would be established, describing the move as an effective boycott.
ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox, and NBC collectively released a statement underscoring the public’s vital interest in receiving accurate and independent information about its government. They added that no administration should have the power to restrict a news organization simply because it objects to the outlet’s reporting.
