Celine Dion returned to the stage on Tuesday evening for the opening of her highly anticipated 16-show residency at the Plenitude Arena, shedding tears as she addressed thousands of fans in the Paris outskirts. The performance marks the singer’s first major live engagement since she stepped back from the spotlight in 2022 due to health complications.

“I had promised myself not to cry,” Dion told the audience at the start of the show. “I don’t keep my promises. But I’m so happy to see you all. I missed you. I’m going to sing like you without crying.”

Dion expressed gratitude for the crowd’s patience and support, telling attendees, “I am everything I am because you loved me.” She also offered well-wishes to international visitors, adding, “If it’s your first time in Paris, I hope you fall in love with it just like I did. However, the excitement has been marred by fraudulent activity. Cybersecurity firm Group-IB reported that over 200 fake ticket websites and social media accounts emerged during the April presale. Authorities warn that some fans who purchased from these sources may be denied entry.

The demand for tickets has been immense; an estimated nine million people registered for presale access after Dion announced her comeback on her birthday, March 30. The announcement was celebrated with a choreographed light display at the Eiffel Tower, which was illuminated in her honor.

Dion previously made a brief stage appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, performing Edith Piaf’s “Hymne A L’Amour” by the Eiffel Tower. Her current Paris run was originally slated for 2020 as part of her Courage World Tour at Paris La Defense Arena but was postponed due to the pandemic and later delayed following her diagnosis of Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). The rare neurological disorder, which causes muscular stiffness and affects speech and mobility, was documented in the 2024 film “I Am: Celine Dion,” leaving many fans uncertain if she would ever perform live again.
