The Association of Amateur Football Clubs of Cameroon (ACFAC) has demanded an investigation into the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) and its president, Samuel Eto’o, citing media reports regarding alleged corruption. The scrutiny centers on accusations that Eto’o improperly accepted a payment from the Russian Football Union linked to a friendly match played between the two nations in October 2023.
According to ACFAC, the Russian Football Union allegedly breached its contract with FECAFOOT by transferring approximately 567,000 euros ($655,000) into a bank account not owned by the Cameroonian federation. The association confirmed plans to initiate legal proceedings against Eto’o in Cameroonian courts while simultaneously filing a separate complaint against the Russian Football Union in Russia.
This development follows Eto’o’s recent public defense of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Last month, the former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker voiced support for Infantino, stating he “hasn’t done anything wrong” amidst growing pressure on the FIFA leader to resign due to a controversial plan to expand the World Cup.
Interesting how Eto’o was just defending Infantino’s integrity. Now his own federation faces a probe over Russian funds. The irony is palpable here.
