Former England captain Ben Stokes produced a match-defining half-century to help Durham post 437 for seven on the opening day of their County Championship fixture against Worcestershire at The Riverside. Although Durham have already secured promotion and the Division Two title, they continued to pile on runs, led by Mayank Agarwal’s outstanding 177 and Ollie Robinson’s unbeaten 78.
In Division One, Surrey’s fight for survival was dealt a significant blow as they were bowled out for just 115 in reply to Glamorgan’s 132 all-out. A total of 20 wickets fell on the opening day at The Oval, with Glamorgan finishing the day on 30 not out in their second innings, holding a 47-run lead.
At the top of the Division One table, Warwickshire kept their title hopes alive with a narrow 17-run advantage over Essex at Chelmsford. Ethan Bamber terrorized the Essex batting lineup, claiming figures of six for 26 to bowl them out for 134. Sam Hain remained unbeaten on 58 as Warwickshire lost nine wickets to close on 151 for nine.
Somerset maintained their grip on the summit with a 144-run lead over Yorkshire at Headingley. Lewis Gregory, Migael Pretorius, and Jake Ball each took three wickets to dismiss Yorkshire for 212, though the visitors fought back to 68 for five in response.
Defending champions Nottinghamshire endured a tense day against Sussex at Hove. Teetering on 150 for eight, the visitors staged a late recovery through a 74-run ninth-wicket partnership between Brett Hutton (59 not out) and Tom Giles (32), setting them up to resume on 232 for nine.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Kent’s Zak Crawley remained unbeaten on 68 to bring his side within 10 runs of Lancashire’s total of 161. Bangladesh seamer Khaled Ahmed claimed five for 42 on his home debut, while James Anderson and Tom Bailey each took three wickets for Lancashire. In Northamptonshire, wickets fell for the hosts as captain Wayne Madsen and Ben Aitchison both scored centuries for Derbyshire, who reached 372 all out.
Surrey’s batting collapse is alarming. If they can’t handle this swing, their survival chances look very slim.
Stokes still has it! Brilliant knock from the former captain, even if Durham are already promoted.
