Cameroon University Semesters at Risk as Teachers’ Strike Persists

The commencement of the academic year at Cameroon’s universities is in jeopardy, with the scheduled start date of October 5 under threat due to an ongoing indefinite strike. The industrial action, led by the National Union of Higher Education Teachers (SYNES), persists despite government announcements regarding pending financial settlements.

At the center of the dispute is a demand for the disbursement of 16 billion CFA francs in academic bonuses, a sum equivalent to approximately 24 million euros. Educators have refused to resume duties until these funds are released, creating a significant standoff that threatens to disrupt higher education across the country.

Although the government has moved to announce payments in an effort to de-escalate the situation, the strike shows no immediate signs of ending. The continued walkout raises serious concerns about whether students will be able to attend classes when the new semester was set to begin later this week.

  1. The timing is terrible. How can universities function if the semester starts with no classes at all?

  2. My cousin is a lecturer there. He says they simply cannot trust promises anymore without proof in the bank.

  3. Another indefinite strike? This keeps happening every year. It is getting exhausting for everyone involved.

  4. 16 billion CFA is a huge sum. Where exactly is that money coming from, and why did the strike start?

  5. I hope the government follows through this time. Students really deserve their education to start on schedule.
