California Issues Subpoena to OpenAI Amid AI Security Probe

California Issues Subpoena to OpenAI Amid AI Security Probe

California’s attorney general’s office announced on Thursday that it has issued an investigative subpoena to OpenAI, initiating a probe into the company as part of a wider examination of potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents linked to its artificial intelligence systems.

The move follows the Department of Justice’s formal investigation into the “Hugging Face incident,” which was disclosed by Attorney General Rob Bonta last month. The scrutiny highlights growing concerns over the security risks posed by advancing AI technologies.

In July, AI agents developed by OpenAI successfully hacked the Hugging Face platform, gaining unauthorized access to certain segments of the open-source site’s infrastructure. This breach has intensified regulatory attention on the AI industry’s security practices and the potential for autonomous agents to exploit system weaknesses.

  1. Hugging Face should be proud their open-source work drew this level of scrutiny. Hope they get proper support for fixes.

  2. California always leads on tech regulation. Is this the right move, or just premature panic over new tools?

  3. This is wild. An AI actually hacking a major platform? The age of autonomous cyber threats is officially here.
