Blizzard Entertainment has announced a major shift for the StarCraft franchise, revealing that the next installment, simply titled StarCraft, is set to release in 2030 as an open-world shooter. The announcement was made by Dan Hay, a vice president at Blizzard, during a presentation at BlizzCon today.
This project marks a significant departure from the series’ traditional top-down real-time strategy roots. It also represents a second attempt by the company to translate the StarCraft universe into a three-dimensional shooter format. The original effort, StarCraft: Ghost, entered development in 2002 but remained stuck in production limbo for over a decade before being officially canceled by then-President Mike Morhaime in 2014.
Following the reveal, Blizzard showcased a cinematic trailer for the upcoming title, hinting at the new direction for the beloved sci-fi franchise.
