Argentina has issued a two-week ultimatum to the United Kingdom, warning of international legal proceedings and economic sanctions if London does not halt an offshore oil exploration project near the disputed Falkland Islands. Argentine President Javier Milei made the threat on Monday, stating that his government will take the matter to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg if the British government fails to stop the operations.
“I instructed the Foreign Ministry and our legal teams to initiate arbitration proceedings against the United Kingdom for the illegal sacking of our resources through the Sea Lion Project in the North Falklands Basin,” Milei wrote on the social media platform X. He emphasized that if the UK does not cease what he termed “illegitimate exploitation” within fourteen days, Argentina will pursue legal action at the international tribunal.
The dispute centers on the Sea Lion project, a significant offshore oil field located approximately 220 kilometers (137 miles) north of the Falkland Islands. The venture is being developed by Israel’s Navitas Petroleum and Britain’s Rockhopper Exploration, both operating under licenses issued by the Falkland Islands authorities. Commercial production is slated to begin in 2028, a prospect that could fundamentally alter the economy of the small archipelago.
Beyond legal threats, Milei’s administration is pursuing legislative measures to penalize companies involved in the project. A bill sent to Argentina’s Congress proposes prison sentences of up to 20 years for individuals who extract resources in the area without Argentine authorization. Furthermore, Milei threatened to ban firms participating in what Buenos Aires views as unauthorized exploration from operating within Argentina’s oil and mining sectors. Authorities are currently investigating at least 60 companies and executives for potential violations.
The UK has firmly defended the rights of Falkland Islanders to develop their natural resources, asserting that the projects are conducted legally under local jurisdiction. Companies involved in the Sea Lion project have also rejected Argentina’s objections, maintaining that they hold valid licenses for their operations.
This latest escalation reignites a sovereignty dispute that has simmered for decades. The Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, have been under British control since 1833. Tensions peaked in 1982 when Argentina invaded the territory, leading to a ten-week war that resulted in the deaths of 649 Argentine soldiers, 255 British service members, and three islanders before British forces reclaimed the islands.
In a 2013 referendum, 99.8% of Falkland Island voters chose to remain a British Overseas Territory, with a turnout of approximately 92%. Argentina continues to reject the results of that vote, maintaining its claim to sovereignty. The current conflict also cites a UN resolution calling on both nations to refrain from unilateral actions while the sovereignty dispute remains unresolved, which Argentina argues the UK has violated by authorizing the oil exploration.
The real question is: who buys the oil if sanctions hit? Global markets rarely care about historical sovereignty claims when profits are at stake.
