Trump Administration Eases Fuel Efficiency Rules; Cornell Rape Case Reopened

The Trump administration has rolled back federal fuel-economy standards for new vehicles, a move that reduces the required annual improvement in fleet efficiency to as much as 1%. Under the revised rules, the average fuel economy target by 2031 is set at 34.9 miles per gallon, a significant decline from the 50.4 mpg benchmark established during the Biden era.

Automakers have welcomed the change, arguing that the new standards better align with current market demand. However, critics caution that lower efficiency targets could lead to higher long-term fuel costs and increased pollution. Additionally, there are concerns that U.S. manufacturers may fall behind international competitors who are advancing more rapidly toward electric vehicle adoption.

In a separate development, prosecutors in New York have reopened a 2024 sexual assault case involving students at Cornell University. The case centers on allegations made by a woman known as Jane Doe, who claims she was drugged and raped by multiple men at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. Cornell University previously defended its handling of the incident, stating that a months-long Title IX investigation was conducted, though no criminal charges were filed at that time.

The university’s response has faced renewed scrutiny. According to reports, campus police investigated the allegations, but local law enforcement was not notified. Students and recent graduates have expressed ongoing concerns regarding sexual violence and safety on campus.

Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, five men have been released on bail following their detention near a military base linked to U.S. strikes on Iran, on suspicion of terror-related offenses. President Trump has publicly questioned the decision to release the suspects. British counterterrorism officials continue to investigate the matter.
