Apple TV is set to enhance its Formula 1 broadcasting experience by introducing Dolby Atmos support, with the upgraded audio slated to premiere during the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The race weekend is scheduled to take place from October 22 through October 25.
This audio upgrade follows Apple’s acquisition of exclusive US broadcast rights for Formula 1 racing last year, marking a significant move into sports streaming. Since launching its coverage earlier this year, the tech giant has established a dedicated channel within the Apple TV app, offering viewers comprehensive access to races, practice sessions, sprint races, and onboard camera feeds, along with team radios and live telemetry data.
Dolby Atmos provides spatial sound technology that creates an immersive audio environment, making it seem as though sound originates from various positions within the room. According to John Couling, Senior Vice President for Entertainment at Dolby Laboratories, Apple can leverage the sport’s existing trackside microphones and sensor infrastructure for the Atmos feed, eliminating the need for additional hardware installation.
As a relatively new entrant in both streaming content and sports broadcasting, this marks the first time Apple TV is incorporating Atmos support for a sporting event. Viewers will require compatible televisions or audio systems to fully experience the spatial sound capabilities.
So I need Apple TV Plus, a subscription, AND fancy sound equipment? My wallet isn’t ready for this level of F1 immersion yet.
Smart move by Apple to use existing trackside mics. No extra hardware costs means they can roll this out faster than expected.
Great for the experience, but will the commentary become less clear with all this spatial chaos? I just want to hear the drivers talk.
I have no idea if my TV supports Atmos. Can someone list the compatible models? Trying to decide if I need new gear.
Finally, the roar of engines will actually feel immersive. Dolby Atmos is a game-changer for sports broadcasting.
