Anthropic has reported that it intercepted and halted multiple instances of scientists utilizing its AI models to advance biological weapons research, according to a threat intelligence report released Thursday. The company emphasized that detecting such misuse is increasingly critical as newer systems, including Fable 5, become more proficient at assisting with scientific inquiry.
The September 2026 report outlines five specific case studies involving Anthropic’s models. The company stated that in every instance, it prioritized caution due to the severe potential consequences, even though legitimate vaccine research can closely resemble bioweapon development. Jacob Klein, Anthropic’s head of threat intelligence, described the situations as highly nuanced rather than overtly malicious.
One prominent example from May involved a request for Claude to draft a grant for gain-of-function research on the chikungunya virus. The proposed study aimed to increase the virus’s transmissibility and its capacity to evade immune responses. Anthropic flagged the request partly because the research was affiliated with a military institute.
Other intercepted activities included gain-of-function studies on avian influenza and efforts to create an atlas of venom toxin peptides alongside a generative pipeline designed to optimize toxin characteristics. In addition to biological threats, the report noted uses of Anthropic’s technology for surveillance, software exploitation, propaganda generation, and weapons systems development.
Anthropic confirmed that all accounts associated with these violations were banned. To protect the researchers involved, who the company describes as working scientists rather than intentional bad actors, Anthropic declined to name the individuals or their institutions, citing concerns that identification could expose them to harm. The findings are being integrated into ongoing efforts to strengthen model safeguards.
