Amazon Unveils New Alexa Tablets with Google Play Support and Premium Build

Amazon has introduced a new lineup of Alexa Tablets, signaling a strategic pivot away from its budget-oriented Fire Tablet series toward more premium, AI-driven devices. The trio of Android-based tablets includes the 8-inch, 11-inch, and a new 12-inch Pro model, all featuring upgraded hardware and deeper integration with Amazon’s Alexa+ virtual assistant.

Pricing for the new devices begins at $230 for the entry-level model and reaches up to $500 for the flagship Pro version. Pre-orders are currently open, with general availability set to begin on October 14.

A major highlight of the announcement is the inclusion of Google Play support. Historically, Amazon’s tablets have been restricted to its own app ecosystem, but these new devices break that barrier, allowing users to access the full breadth of Android applications. This change also extends to two newly announced Kids’ Tablets, which come in vibrant colors and bundle Google Play access while retaining parental controls over downloads and usage.

The new tablets also bring Alexa+ to the forefront of the user interface. Rather than functioning solely as a voice-activated helper, Alexa+ is woven into the OS, enabling screen-aware interactions where the assistant can interpret visual content and answer questions about what is displayed. Additionally, the system supports continuous conversation flows without requiring users to repeat the wake word for each prompt.

Hardware specifications vary across the models. The base Alexa Tablet 8 offers 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, while the 11-inch model doubles the RAM to 8GB. The standout device, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, features an 8-core 4nm processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and a 12-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Notably, Amazon is moving away from the plastic construction typical of Fire Tablets, opting for a more upscale aluminum chassis across the entire lineup.

For the Pro model, Amazon is also releasing a suite of accessories, including a magnetic Pro Keyboard with a trackpad that pairs without Bluetooth, and a Pro Pen supporting 4,096 pressure levels and tilt detection. An anti-glare Nanomatte display option is available for an additional $50.

Alongside the main tablets, Amazon launched upgraded Kids’ Tablets in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes. The larger model boasts a 2.5K display and 8GB of RAM. While these devices offer improved hardware and AI-powered storytelling features, they come with a one-year limited warranty, a reduction from the two-year guarantee provided on previous generations.
