Security expert Matthew “Zigula” Gore-Kormanik recently investigated a deceptive dating application known as Dora, which led to the discovery of increasingly sophisticated AI-driven romance scams. While examining the platform, Gore-Kormanik received an incoming call notification from a user named Jennifer. Her profile identified her as a 41-year-old Sagittarius with distinctive red hair, blue eyes, and piercings, listing interests that included music, horror films, nightlife, and sports.
Upon accepting the video call, Gore-Kormanik noted immediate anomalies. The feed did not display a live human presence; instead, it showed a moving tapestry, likely animated by a fan, accompanied by significant audio distortion in the background. After the call concluded, the entity identifying as Jennifer sent a follow-up message praising the interaction and complimenting his voice, claiming it was “way better than expected.” This comment revealed a critical flaw in the scam: Gore-Kormanik’s microphone was not actually active during the call, indicating that the fraudulent user was relying on pre-recorded or AI-generated audio responses rather than real-time conversation.
The incident highlights a growing trend in online fraud where cybercriminals leverage artificial intelligence and deepfake technology to impersonate attractive profiles on dating apps. By combining visual glitches with tailored audio feedback, scammers aim to create the illusion of a genuine connection while masking their true identities. Experts warn that as these tools become more accessible, victims may find it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real people and AI-generated personas in digital romantic interactions.
I’m not shocked, just disappointed. If they can’t handle a real video call, they were never serious about romance anyway. Red flag everywhere.
