Wakefield Trinity secured a hard-fought 25-18 triumph over the Warrington Wolves in the penultimate round of the Super League season at the DIY Kitchens Stadium. The result ensures Daryl Powell’s side retains an outside mathematical chance of finishing third, closing the gap to just two points behind their opponents.
Warrington remain on 38 points while Wakefield moved up to fourth place on 36 points. For the Wolves to secure third spot, they must now defeat Toulouse Olympique in Round 27.
Warrington established an early dominance, leading 14-6 at half-time. Leon Hayes contributed two penalties, while Josh Smith and Matty Ashton crossed for tries. Hayes successfully converted Ashton’s score just before the break. In response, Wakefield saw Tom Johnstone touch down, with Max Jowitt providing the conversion.
The second half saw Wakefield rally significantly. Isaiah Vaganas scored a double, powering through from close range on both occasions. Cam Scott also crossed the whitewash following a goal-line dropout that caught Warrington out, and Mason Lino added a crucial drop goal. Jowitt maintained perfection with his kicking throughout the match.
Despite a late try from Albert Hopoate for Warrington, it remained unconverted, leaving the visitors unable to recover. The defeat marks Warrington’s frustration as they fall short in a highly physical contest, while Wakefield benefits from the result in the tight race for the top four.
