Pierre Gasly delivered a dominant performance for Alpine, securing a surprising pole position for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The French driver edged out Mercedes’ George Russell by a narrow margin of 0.060 seconds to claim the top spot on the grid.
The result marks a significant milestone for Alpine, with Gasly adding to his previous victory at this venue, which he achieved in 2020 while driving for AlphaTauri. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri rounded out the front row in third place.
Ferrari experienced a mixed session, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton qualifying fourth and fifth despite utilizing upgraded engines. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took sixth, while team mate Lando Norris struggled to find form, finishing ninth after a difficult qualifying session.
In a major setback for Mercedes’ championship hopes, leader Kimi Antonelli qualified seventh but will be forced to start from the back of the grid due to a penalty incurred for installing a new engine.
