Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic-led resolution to remove U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran on Thursday, in one of the final congressional votes before the November midterm elections.
The measure failed by a vote of 49 to 50, reflecting a party that remains largely supportive of President Trump’s military actions even as internal dissent grows over the economic impact of the ongoing conflict.
Four Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina—joined all but one Democrat in supporting the resolution. Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania was the only Democrat to vote against it.
The resolution followed a similar measure passed by the House in July by a vote of 214 to 208. Last week, the House approved a separate war powers resolution with 220 votes, including seven Republicans crossing party lines, signaling increasing frustration within the GOP.
While war powers resolutions are not legally binding, they serve as symbolic rebukes to the executive branch. Lawmakers have never formally authorized the conflict with Iran, which began in February.
The vote comes amid rising fuel costs driven by the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz. Diesel prices have recently surpassed $6.50 a gallon, while gasoline prices continue to strain households.
“Americans are getting crushed at the gas pumps, working families are getting cleaned out at grocery store counters, and family farms are going under because Trump took this country to war without authorization, without a plan, and without a second thought to the consequences,” said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., dismissed the vote as political but acknowledged widespread desire among Republicans for the war to conclude. “I think there are a lot of Republican members… everybody wants to see wars come to a conclusion,” Thune said, adding that the administration is working to reopen shipping lanes and reduce pressure on consumers.
Some Republican candidates have also voiced criticism. Rep. Ashley Hinson of Iowa, running for an open Senate seat, stated that“Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran.”Mike Rogers, the GOP nominee for Senate in Michigan, said the war must end to lower costs but noted that“Michigan families can’t afford to wait.”
According to the Department of Defense, at least 19 U.S. service members have been killed since fighting began. However, recent reports indicate the Pentagon has not provided a complete accounting of the war’s financial toll and casualty figures.
Trump told the United Nations earlier this week that a peace agreement with Iran may not be reached until after the midterm elections in November.
