He acknowledged that wars are becoming increasingly frequent and complex. The UN chief detailed the humanitarian toll, pointing to disruptions in food, fertilizer, and energy exports through critical waterways like the Black Sea, Strait of Hormuz, and Bab al-Mandeb. These disruptions, combined with attacks on oil infrastructure in the Middle East, are having a devastating impact on economies worldwide.
While developed nations might manage rising interest rates and fuel costs, Guterres emphasized that developing countries are facing desperate conditions due to soaring energy and food prices. He stressed that the international community must address these compounding crises.
As his term concludes on December 31, 2026, Guterres called for essential reforms to ensure the UN remains relevant. He specifically criticized the Security Council for still reflecting the geopolitical structure of World War II. Potential successors currently include International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi, former Senegalese President Macky Sall, and Ecuadorian diplomat Maria Fernanda Espinosa. To assume the role, a candidate requires at least nine votes from the 15-member council and no veto from any of the five permanent members before a final UN General Assembly vote.
