Paramount has reached a settlement agreement with California and a coalition of 11 other states that had filed suit against its proposed $81 billion merger with Warner Bros Discovery (WBD). The resolution removes the final significant legal barrier to the deal, which aims to consolidate several of Hollywood’s most prominent television networks and film studios under a single corporate umbrella.
Although the U.S. Department of Justice granted approval for the transaction in June, a group of state attorneys general, spearheaded by California, challenged the merger. They argued that combining two of the last five major legacy studios in Hollywood would eliminate vital competition, potentially resulting in fewer films released in theaters and on streaming services.
The settlement clears the path for Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery to proceed with the consolidation, marking a major shift in the media landscape.
