President Donald Trump asserted that the Department of Justice will intervene to regulate the artificial intelligence sector if deemed necessary, while simultaneously emphasizing his commitment to fostering rapid innovation. Writing on Truth Social, the president declared, “Whoever wins AI, WINS!” and claimed the United States maintains a leading position over China and other global rivals.
Trump stressed that he does not intend to hinder the expansion of AI, describing it as a transformative technology surpassing the impact of the Industrial Revolution or the Internet. However, he noted that law enforcement agencies, including the DOJ, are available to “rein things in if we have to,” adding that he is focused primarily on encouraging the development of AI and superintelligence (SI).
This stance comes despite growing pressure from leading tech executives to slow progress. Following warnings from activist Coxon, prominent figures including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind chair Demis Hassabis have called for a deceleration in AI development and increased federal oversight.
The White House has generally adopted a permissive approach to regulation. In June, Trump issued an executive order establishing a framework for voluntary compliance, requiring companies to work with the administration to evaluate frontier models and provide government access up to 30 days prior to broad public release. Trump also highlighted in a September 14 post that the administration already possesses significant criminal and regulatory authority over these technology firms.
