Austin Resident Wounded in ICE Shooting Sparks Calls for Independent Probe

A federal immigration officer wounded a man on Sunday in Austin, Texas, igniting demands from local leaders for a comprehensive and independent inquiry into the shooting.

The incident took place just before 1 p.m. on the city’s north side. According to Robert Luckritz, chief of Austin-Travis County EMS, the victim sustained a single gunshot wound to the torso and was being treated in serious condition.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson later clarified that while the man’s condition remained serious, he was stable. Watson declined to disclose the nationality of the individual shot. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis noted that preliminary information suggests the shooting may have followed a foot pursuit, though she cautioned that details were still developing. Both Davis and Watson confirmed that local police were not directly involved in the use of force.

Mike Siegel, a member of the Austin City Council representing District 7, provided a more specific account of the events. He alleged that an ICE officer rammed the victim’s vehicle before exiting his federal car and discharging his weapon at least five times.

Local media reported finding a damaged dark blue Toyota Corolla parked beneath an overpass, with visible bullet holes on the passenger side. Siegel stated he observed at least two such impacts on the vehicle.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the specifics of the encounter.

U.S. Representative Greg Casar, whose district includes parts of Austin, called for immediate transparency. “The horror has come to our city: ICE has shot a person in Austin this morning,” Casar wrote on X. He added, “As the facts emerge, I am demanding a full, independent investigation, immediate release of the body camera footage, and accountability for any ICE officer who broke the law.”

Mayor Watson expressed anger over the incident but said he was not entirely surprised, citing previous shootings involving ICE in other American cities. He emphasized that residents have a right to know the truth and requested that local officials participate in the investigation, questioning whether ICE could conduct a credible probe of its own actions.

This shooting follows a series of high-profile incidents involving federal immigration agents earlier this year. In July, an ICE officer fatally shot 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo of Houston during a pursuit involving unmarked vehicles while he was driving his construction crew to work. Also in July, 25-year-old Johan Sebastián, a Colombian national, was shot by an ICE officer in Maine. Relatives of the Maine officer, an Army veteran with known mental health struggles, criticized his qualification to carry a badge and firearm.

These events occur against the backdrop of the Trump administration’s intensified mass deportation efforts. Enforcement actions have drawn widespread condemnation following the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota last winter.
