Eighteen individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the assassination of former Haitian President Jovenel Moïse, according to statements released by United States officials.
Moïse, who was 53 years old, was fatally shot on July 7, 2021, inside his private residence. The attack was carried out by a paramilitary group consisting of approximately 20 military-trained Colombian mercenaries. Reports indicate that Moïse’s personal security detail failed to intervene during the assault, allowing the killers to reach and execute the president.
The murder of Moïse triggered widespread instability and chaos throughout Haiti, marking a pivotal and violent moment in the nation’s recent political history.
