Republican officials confirmed they intercepted calls between a Virginia lawmaker and a federal legislator, according to statements released Thursday.
Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.) disclosed that the FBI and Department of Justice sent him correspondence dated July and August informing him their surveillance included some of his telephone conversations with a Virginia state legislator.
The congressman’s office distributed photographs of the two notification letters, which Subramanyam said he received directly from the agencies.
The disclosure raises questions about the scope of federal monitoring involving state-level political figures and the protocols for notifying targets of surveillance activities.
