Authorities in France have determined that there is no evidence suggesting a train derailment in the Normandy region was the result of a deliberate attack or sabotage. The incident occurred on Friday evening near the municipalities of Cleon and Tourville-la-Riviere, leaving at least 44 people injured.
Rouen’s public prosecutor, Sebastian Gallois, stated on Saturday evening that investigators found “no indication of a malicious act carried out with the deliberate intention of derailing the train.” His comments followed earlier speculation by some politicians who had raised the possibility of criminal activity or sabotage.
The derailed train was carrying approximately 180 passengers when it struck an unidentified object at around 7:30 p.m. local time. Five carriages were involved in the crash, with one overturning completely. Police reported discovering a fragment of rail on the track that may have contributed to the accident.
Among the injured is an 18-year-old woman who was initially in critical condition. She was evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in Rouen, though reports indicate her condition has improved since the rescue operation.
Transport Minister Tabarot confirmed that 140 firefighters responded to the scene. SNCF Reseau, the national rail network operator, suspended traffic on the affected line while prioritizing passenger care and the restoration of safe operating conditions. Local authorities have urged the public to avoid the area as investigations continue.
