Two Injured and Mosque Damaged in Saudi Arabia After Houthi Strike

Saudi Civil Defence authorities reported that two individuals were injured and a mosque sustained damage on Saturday after a projectile fired by Yemeni Houthi rebels struck the southern Jazan region. The impact also destroyed several vehicles in the al-Tuwal governorate.

A spokesperson for the civil defence agency condemned the attack as a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law,” emphasizing that the targeting of civilian infrastructure was unjustified. Emergency protocols were activated immediately following the incident.

In response to the strike, Saudi authorities issued a warning to residents in the nearby Khamis Mushait governorate. The civil defence later confirmed that the immediate danger in that area had passed.

Conversely, the Houthis stated that the projectile was aimed at a Saudi military base in Sharurah, located in the southern Najran province, rather than civilian sites.

This incident marks another escalation in recent days, during which Iran-backed Houthi forces have increased missile and drone operations against southern Saudi Arabia. On Tuesday, the group attacked civilian and economic facilities in the cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran, resulting in 73 injuries, including women and children.

The cross-border strikes are part of a broader resurgence in Yemen’s conflict that began in July, ending approximately four years of relative stability maintained under a United Nations-brokered truce. Houthi fighters have recently seized control of Yemen’s entire Red Sea coastline, including the strategic port city of Mocha, while government forces have initiated new military fronts in the regions of al-Jawf, Marib, and al-Bayda.

According to the International Organization for Migration and local officials, the renewed fighting has killed more than 500 people and displaced tens of thousands. The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session this month, where Special Envoy Hans Grundberg cautioned that Yemen is entering “a new and more dangerous phase of war.”
