Hampshire’s 2027 Ashes Test Directly Linked to 2023 Headingley Switch

The decision to award Hampshire a men’s Ashes Test in 2027 is a direct consequence of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) switching a fixture from Southampton to Headingley during Australia’s previous tour in 2023. Consequently, the Utilita Bowl in Southampton will host its first men’s Ashes Test next year, while both Old Trafford in Manchester and Headingley in Leeds are excluded from the schedule.

Southampton was originally designated to host the 2023 clash with Australia before the venue was swapped. In response, Hampshire received financial compensation exceeding £1m from the ECB and were subsequently granted a test match in the upcoming series. Representatives for both Hampshire and the ECB declined to comment on the matter.

Colin Graves, who chaired the ECB during the 2018 announcement of the 2023 venues and currently serves as chair of Yorkshire, stated he did not participate in the match allocation process. “I always left the room when their recommendations were discussed by the board. I was not involved,” Graves told the Guardian.

The 2023 series was organized under the ECB’s former ‘competitive tender’ system, which allowed venues to submit financial bids for fixtures. This approach has since been replaced by a rotation system, which was endorsed by the 18 first-class counties and the Marylebone Cricket Club for allocations through 2031.

Looking ahead, the ECB has committed to hosting at least one men’s Ashes Test in the north of England starting from 2031. Under this new framework, Southampton will receive a men’s Test in alternating Ashes series. Both Headingley and Old Trafford have already hosted men’s Tests in the two most recent home Ashes campaigns.

In the upcoming 2027 series, the northernmost men’s Test will be held at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Meanwhile, Headingley will serve as the venue for the sole women’s Ashes Test of the series.
