World soccer’s governing body, FIFA, has clarified that the location for the 2030 World Cup final remains undecided, rebutting recent assertions by Moroccan officials. Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, had claimed during a political rally on Thursday that Morocco had already secured the right to host the tournament’s climax.
Lekjaa specified that the King Hassan II Stadium in the city of Benslimane would be the venue. According to translations provided by The Associated Press, he told attendees, “Hate it or love it… The city is Benslimane, the Hassan II stadium is the stadium.” He further expressed his hope that the Moroccan national team would be competing in the match.
The 115,000-seat stadium is currently under construction near Casablanca. Morocco is set to co-host the 2030 tournament alongside Spain and Portugal, marking only the second time an African nation will stage World Cup final games, following South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 event.
In response to the claims, FIFA informed news outlets that the decision regarding the final host venue would be made “in due course.” This statement follows previous denials from the governing body regarding reports that FIFA President Gianni Infantino had promised Morocco the final in exchange for political support ahead of his re-election bid next year.
